THE RETURN OF SHERLOCK HOLMES contains thirteen cases of the greatest detective in fiction. In his Life of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (which is another PAN Book), John Dickson Carr tells how Sir Arthur was forced by public clamour to bring Holmes back to life, though he had killed him off ten years before. An American magazine in 1903 offered 5000 dollars each for six or more new Sherlock Holmes stories, and the English rights were worth about half that sum.
