Com esse livro clássico Suetônio nos legou uma quantidade imensa de informações sobre o império romano. Sua escrita tem algumas características claramente deficientes para os padrões de hoje, como não apresentar datas para os acontecimentos (felizmente há nas notas ao fim do livro) e dar muita atenção a supostos eventos fantásticos, presságios e milagres. Curiosamente ele utiliza uma estrutura bem definida em todos os relatos: começa com os ancestrais de cada imperador, sua ascensão ao poder, suas qualidades, seus vícios, sua morte, sua aparência física e seu funeral.
