This edition uses the text as it appeared in its first serial publication in 1859 to convey the full scope of Dickens's vision, and includes the original illustrations by H.K. Browne ('Phiz'). Richard Maxwell's introduction discusses the intricate interweaving of epic drama with personal tragedy.

Um triângulo amoroso durante a Revolução Francesa é a ideia básica de Um Conto de Duas Cidades, porém o livro não é um romance, pelo menos não na concepção mais popular do termo. Dickens, alternando entre o conflito Darnay-Lucie-Carton, revela as noções de justiça que formaram o movimento e que mais tarde são transformadas em vingança, como vemos através do Dr. Manette, pai de Lucie.

Somos levados até as masmorras da Bastilha, passamos pelas ruas miseráveis da Paris do século XVIII, e sofremos com as escolhas aparentemente inócuas, mas que revelam graves consequências e incrível força de caráter.

Como tudo que o autor já escreveu, os personagens principais são falhos, e nessa humanidade vemos a necessidade de edificação que os tão chamados vilões também procuram e que se demonstram incapazes de alcançar.

A escrita é mais pesada e rebuscada que outras obras mais famosas como David Copperfield e Grandes Expectativas. Nada que impeça a leitura de alguém acima da faixa dos quatorze simplesmente pela necessidade de conhecer um pouco do contexto histórico.
