But in the most bitter betrayal, his mentor, Rauf Ilwan, once a firebrand revolutionary who convinced Said that stealing from the rich in a unjust society is an act of justice, is now himself a rich man, a respected newspaper editor who wants nothing to do with the disgraced Said. As Said's wild attempts to achieve his idea of justice badly misfire, he becomes a hunted man so driven by hatred that he can only recognize too late his last chance at redemption.

Procurando a luz

Primeiro e único Nobel de língua árabe, Naguib Mahfuz escreveu esta trama policial ambientada num Egito prestes a explodir em uma revolução. Said Mahran, uma espécie de Robin Hood egípcio, sai da cadeia e descobre-se perdido: não tem mais família, nem dinheiro, nem casa e nem amigos. Até mesmo o mentor revolucionário de Said virou as costas para ele. Em busca de vingança ele acaba se aproximando novamente de uma antiga admiradora sua, a prostituta Nur (luz em árabe), que tentará nortear o caminho de Said.

Uma curiosidade: a Wikipedia diz que este é o primeiro romance de língua árabe a incorporar o fluxo de consciência na narração. Citation needed, eu sei, mas uma coisa não tem como negar: desde jovem Mahfuz leu "escritores modernistas como Proust, Kafka e Joyce".
