Ana, aos 15 anos, é obrigada a se casar com Juan (um homem com mais de o dobro de sua idade) para ir aos Estados Unidos e, assim, conseguir seu visto de residência e levar toda a família para o país. Sem falar inglês e destinada a servir seu marido, Ana passa por situações horríveis sozinha em um país de língua desconhecida, violência doméstica e estupro conjugal fazem parte de sua narrativa.

Os primeiros capítulos foram difíceis de digerir ao imaginar todas as situações vividas pela personagem, que no auge de sua inocência ganhou um fardo tão grande para carregar. O livro conta com muitas questões importantes, problemas raciais, machismo, política e é uma aula sobre a história da República Dominicana. Entrei na leitura crendo se tratar de algum romance adolescente ou uma obra com uma pegada mais YA, me enganei! E que surpresa incrível. Fazia tempo que não entrava totalmente às cegas em uma leitura. Acompanhei as páginas sofrendo e torcendo muito pela jovem Ana que cresceu durante a estória de uma maneira muito bonita. Adorei como o livro tem leves pitadas de realismo mágico.

Gostei de ler um livro desta perspectiva e já adicionei outros à lista.
