Mendal W. Johnson
Ele frequentou a Miami High School, a Universidade de Miami, 1946-49, e passou parte de sua carreira como jornalista (1953-55, editor-chefe de Skipper, Annapolis, Maryland; 1956, editor de esportes do Brownsville Herald; 1957, noite editor da cidade do Boletim Laramie). Mais tarde, ele se afiliou à Marinha Mercante dos Estados Unidos e trabalhou como consultor de banco. Johnson foi casado duas vezes, primeiro com Joan Betts (divorciada, duas filhas, Lynne e Gail); depois a Ellen Argo, com quem compartilhava o amor pela vela. Mais tarde, eles viveram em 63 Conduit Street, Condado de Anne Arundel, Annapolis: a capital histórica de Maryland, conhecida como "a capital mundial da vela".
