Em "Pássaro do Paraíso" (Bird of Paradise), Joyce Carol Oates mergulha em uma narrativa densa que entrelaça obsessão e luto através da perspectiva de dois protagonistas marcados por uma tragédia comum: o assassinato de uma mulher nos anos 1950. A autora utiliza sua característica prosa psicológica para explorar como o passado molda a identidade de forma irreversível. Como ponto positivo, destaco a maestria de Oates na construção da atmosfera de tensão psicológica. O livro brilha ao explorar a memória fragmentada, transportando o leitor para o interior da mente de personagens que tentam desesperadamente reconciliar suas versões do passado com a realidade brutal do presente. A escrita é visceral e captura com perfeição a angústia da perda. Me incomodou um pouco o ritmo da narrativa. O estilo prolixo e as constantes digressões internas da autora, embora contribuam para a profundidade dos personagens, por vezes tornam a leitura arrastada, fazendo com que o mistério central perca o fôlego em meio a descrições emocionais exaustivas.
