The Fortune of the Rougons is the first in Zola's famous Rougon-Macquart series of novels. In it we learn how the two branches of the family came about, and the origins of the hereditary weaknesses passed down the generations. Murder, treachery, and greed are the keynotes, and just as the Empire was established through violence, the "fortune" of the Rougons is paid for in blood.

Set in the fictitious Provençal town of Plassans, The Fortune of the Rougons tells the story of Silvère and Miette, two idealistic young supporters of the republican resistance to Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte's coup d'état of December 1851. They join the woodcutters and peasants of the Var to seize control of Plassans, and are opposed by the Bonapartist loyalists led by Silvère's uncle, Pierre Rougon. Meanwhile, the foundations of the Rougon family and its illegitimate Macquart branch are being laid in the brutal beginnings of the Imperial regime.

A Fortuna dos Rougon - Émile Zola

Zola se inspirou em Balzac quando uniu seus livros dentro da Comédia Humana. Formulou uma árvore genealógica composta de 5 gerações da família Rougon (braço legítimo) - Macquart (braço bastardo). Escreveu 20 romances que tem como personagens os vários membros dessa família, criando um gênero literário com uma ideia central: de que o homem é fruto de sua herança genética e do ambiente em que vive. Esse gênero é o Naturalismo e se baseia em correntes filosóficas e científicas que o autor vinha estudando.
Publicado em 1870 esse é o primeiro volume da série, se iniciando com Adelaide Fouque começando a formação dessa família. Os personagens centrais são Pedro Rougon e sua esposa lutando para fazer fortuna em Plassans, província francesa fictícia, e seus irmãos bastardos. A ação se passa em 1851 precedendo o golpe militar dado por Louis Napoleão, derrubando a república. Retrata como as pessoas escolhem sua posição política de acordo com seus interesses. Intrigas, sangue, mesquinhez, egoísmo, brigas familiares, amor, revolução, ódio, traição e muito mais!
Destaque para Silvério, o jovem neto de Adelaide (ou tia Dide), adolescente que se deixa levar pelo ardor republicano e representa a inocência.
